Nipple Reconstruction

Reconstruction of the Nipple and Areola

The reconstruction of the nipple and areola after breast cancer treatment is an important step in the process of restoring the body and self-confidence of patients. After the breast has been completely or partially removed, the reconstruction of the breast helps not only physically but also emotionally to regain one's own body image and well-being. The reconstruction of the nipple represents the final, aesthetic step that completes the breast shape and gives it a natural appearance. It is crucial that nipple reconstruction is only performed after the first months following breast reconstruction, as the tissue contours can still change during the healing process.

Methods for Nipple Reconstruction:

There are various proven surgical methods used to build the nipple, including:

  • Local Flap Surgery

A technique in which surrounding tissue is used to form a new nipple. This method utilizes the natural skin color and texture.

  • Medical Tattooing

A non-surgical method for pigmentation of the areola that creates a natural appearance and establishes symmetry with the healthy side.

  • Skin Transplantation

In this method, skin is taken from another part of the body to reconstruct the areola. This enables natural coloring.

  • 3D Nipple Prostheses

A non-surgical alternative in which realistic silicone prostheses are used that can be attached to the reconstructed breast.

Tattooing and Permanent Make-up:

Another procedure to complement nipple reconstruction is tattooing or permanent make-up. After the physical reconstruction of the nipple, it can be further adjusted through precise tattooing or using permanent make-up to achieve the natural color and texture of the areola and nipple. The tattooing is usually performed under local anesthesia and is a painless method to achieve the natural color tone and ensure an aesthetically pleasing result.

These various techniques for nipple reconstruction are designed to facilitate not only the physical but also the psychological healing of affected patients by helping them feel completely comfortable in their bodies again. Each method has its own advantages, and the choice of the right technique depends on the individual situation of the patient, the type of breast reconstruction, and personal wishes.

Nipple reconstruction is not only a surgical procedure but also part of the emotional healing process. It ensures that the patient can fully identify with her body again, which makes a significant contribution to restoring self-esteem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to the most important questions about nipple reconstruction

Before an elective surgical procedure, it is recommended to have a blood laboratory test and an ECG performed about 2 weeks in advance. You can schedule this with your family doctor or with us at the Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery Clinic. It is also advisable to have a current ultrasound finding of your breast prepared in advance. Other therapies by attending oncologists and internists should not be performed simultaneously. Please note that you should refrain from blood-thinning medications such as aspirin about 4 weeks before the planned surgery date. Alcohol and nicotine consumption should also be reduced during this time to support your health.
A nipple reconstruction can be performed either under local anesthesia or under general anesthesia. For particularly anxious patients, we recommend performing the procedure under general anesthesia.
The duration of the procedure varies depending on the surgical technique used.
Depending on the chosen surgical technique, you may spend one night in our Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery Clinic to ensure comprehensive care and safety. In other cases, you have the option to leave the practice just a few hours after the procedure.
The suture material used will be removed 14 days after the procedure, and physical rest is recommended during this time. Pain medication can be taken if needed. After removal of the suture material, intensive care is recommended.
The first results of a nipple reconstruction are visible immediately after the procedure. Once the swelling and any bruising have subsided, the final result usually shows after about 3-6 months.
After a nipple reconstruction, patients are usually conditionally socially acceptable a few days after treatment.
